Lesson 1

Students write a paragraph about the most difficult thing about learning English.

Vocabulary

topic sentence- A sentence that tells what the subject of the paragraph is. Often it is the first sentence in the paragraph.

first draft- the first time something is written.

Brainstorming- thinking of lots of ideas. For example, if I’m writing about a city I could just write the name of the city, and add all the things it makes me think of.

Write Learning English in a bubble on the board, and surround it with Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening and Understanding. (Have students copy this in their notebooks as you are writing.) Ask students for suggestions and add them. For example, students might add things like pronunciation, spelling, people talking fast, slang, and vocabulary. Ask for some examples and students might add things like, asking for directions, filling out forms, etc. Add more examples if you can. Now the students are thinking of their own experiences that they have some ideas to write.

Write the first sentence on the board and explain that this is the topic sentence. The topic sentence is the subject of the paragraph, what the paragraph is about. Everything in the paragraph will be about this.

The hardest thing about learning English is _______________. Encourage them to use words and phrases from the board and to add their own examples and experiences.

Model a few sentences as examples. Also ask students for examples.

The hardest thing about learning English is speaking. I have trouble pronouncing some letters. When I say words wrong and sometimes people don’t understand me. I didn’t know where to go when I got off the bus, but the bus driver didn’t understand me.

There are many diffrences between my aunt Sarah and my uncle Ali. They have different personalities, education, and they like to do different things.

First, my aunt Sarah likes to make jokes with her children. Sarah is inteallgint also. And, she loves to shop. I remamber that when she went shopping and she sbent sevan houer. My uncle Ali is a serious persone. Ali likes to stay home. Some time Ali goes to the beach with his family.

Second, Sarah’s major is law. Sarah graduated in 1999 from Dammam. Ali’s major is human resources. He graduated in 1998 from U.S.A

My high school and Spring International

Would you prefer your high school to spring?

I really liked the "Lycée Prince de liège", my high school, where I was studying for six years. It was at Kinshasa, the capitol of my country, Congo. Spring International is one of the best English center in the U.S. The schedule of "Prince de Liège", the teachers and the size of the schools are very different from Spring International.

I lived a lot of important moments of my life there.



First, the schedule of "Lycée Prince de Liège" is very different than Spring. We had nine hours of studies unlike here at Spring,where we actually have only five hours. Like at spring, we had the weekends off.At Spring, we have afternoon class every day, but I had it just few days a week at my high school. I really didn't like the schedule of "Lycée Prince de Liège".

Second, the teachers at Spring aren't the same as my high school. In my high school, we were like in a military academy. You couldn't laugh with the teachers, make some joke and speak with them out of class.We had to wear uniforms and line up every day before get in class.By cons, at Spring,the teachers are very kind,cool and helpful. You feel relaxed when you are studying at Spring.

Third, "Lycée Prince de Liège" had a bigger buildings than Spring International.It had three fields for soccer, three for basketball, the laboratory for each technical course and a large public place place in the middle of the school.On the other side, Spring International had a big buildings even if they are less large than my high school.

Finally, I really like Spring even if sometimes, I have homesick for my high school. I would like to continue to study here because the teachers and the schedule are better.However, Spring International is smaller than "Lycée Prince de Liège" but I still like it.

My friends Hamdan and Meshal have many things in common.and also many differences.However how they have many these differences on the other hand there is many things they have in common.they are still my best friends.There are many differences and similarities about their tribe.They are from different countries.Their personalities are sometimes different and in some ways the same.The tribe that they are from is a very big tribe,and Famous in the middle East.Its called Al shehi tribe.They are from this tribe.I think that they are related to each other,because in my country when someone is from the same tribe that mean he is related to anyone from his tribe.I know about their tribe.They are very nice and kind.They always do many good things.That's why they are very famous.The personalities They have are very interesting.Meshal has a very interesting personalty.He is very funny and active.He always wants to have fun and do many exciting things.He enjoys doing these funny things,and he always makes us laugh.Unlike Hamdan he has different personalty.He is very calm and he is always quiet.He has a very calm mood.He is very kind and friendly.He always likes to help people,so he is very helpful.They are from different countries.They had to move from their countries.Like Hamdan is from United Arab Emeritus.Meshal is from Oman and this country is close to the UAE,but Hamdan had to move to USA,because he wants to complete his studies in USA.Meshal moved with his family to Kuwait.They want to live there.They think that is better for them.At the end.I always hope good luck for mu friends and wish my best for them.

Do you know what's the diffrence between my brothers Ali and yousif ? They have lot of things in common , like their jobs, perssonslities , goals in life .

Ali and yousif have diffrent jobs . Ali is apolice officer and he works in the Abu dabai police department . ON the other hand ,yousif is an English teacher . He teaches police student English . He is very goods English teacher . He teaches my many times.

Both of them have really good personalities .Ali is funny,kind, and smart. he is so loving with his kids. He likes to play jokes and read books in his free time . yousif is funny ,active ,and intealligent. He likes to play soccer and swim in his free time . He usually plays with me on my team. yousif is very good father and he is very good with all family . yousif usually helps us if we need any thing.

Also, they have diffrent goals in their lives. Ali wants to be a popular police officer and he likes to help people .However ,yousif wants to teachs English more andhe wants to get a master in Adu dabai unversity . he has alot of things to do now such as study master and teachs his kids English also.

Finally,iam very lukcy becouse they are my brothers.I hope they will both reach thier goals.Ilove them so mush and i miss them so mush . They gave me advice to came to america and study hard. Even though they have different jobs, personalities ,and goals,they are both smarts and good brothers. Iam very happy becouse they are my brothers.

No one is born with same personality. Two of my relatives who were raised together, I Love them so much. My sister Nouf and my cousin Fatma . They have same differences and a lot of similarities. They share most activities. Sometimes people think that they are sisters. I feel that they have many things alike. One they other hand they are different in some ways like personality,’ looks, and education.

My sister Nouf, and my cosine fatma, have amazing looks.’ All my family thinks that these two girl are the most beautiful girl in the family. Both have long black hair, grey eyes, and bronze skin. Nouf tall and little fat her friend called her chubby girl, in contrast, Fatma is short and skinny all her frined called her mouse because she is small and short like a mouse. Also, there is another difference between Nouf and Fatma. Nouf has a serious smile all the time but, Fatma has a funny smile. However, these tow girls are still the most beautiful girls in my family.

Furthermore, there are similarities in their personalise. Nouf has a serious personality, but she is kind and friendly. She loves and helps all the people. When any body needs any things like advice, love, or money she does not hesitate when I feel upset and need to talk with anyone I go to her quickly after I talked to her I feel comfortable. In the same way, my cousin’s personality is like my sister’s, but is funnier and kinder. She has a sense of humour. I remembered that one day when I want to the mall with Fatma and she was telling jokes until the mall was closing and we did not do shopping or eat, we spent all the day laughing at Fatima's jokes, but she still has acts the same as my sister’s. In spite of this, they have different habits. Nouf likes all kinds of food. Sometimes she spends all her money on an expensive restaurant. Also, she hates shopping. On the other hand, Fatma is crazy about shopping and her style. She spends all her money on these things. Both have some similarities and differences in their personalities.

Finally, both Nouf and Fatma love education very much. Nouf has a bachelor degree in law that is why she has a serious personality. Also, she likes to read a lot of books all the time. Like Fatma, Nouf dream is to continue her education and get a master degree. Fatma has a bachelor in fashion design, for this reason her personality is less serious than Nouf. Otherwise, both share in this point which is the love of education.

In the end, maybe they are two people who were together and spent all their time with each other, but that does not make them copy of each other. Even if they are similar there are absolutely differences between them such as, looks, personality, and education.

my father and I have similar and different. he studied in the U.SA. like me but he studied in Boston. my father has three sisters and four brothers . I have two old sisters and on younger brother. his personality is different because he get angry fast. my father had difficult life when he was young because he had to study and work in the same time.

my father studied in Boston but I am studying in Denver . I want to learn computer engineering , but may father learned computer science. my father came with may mother , but i came alone. they lived in apartment but i am lived in host family for four month but right now i am living in apartment. he learned in university at Boston i don't what the name of university but i will study in CU.

my father's younger life was different: he was living with my grand father. they had middle class life , like all nine of them living in small house.before i came to the U.S.A. , i was living with my family in big house. my father was shepherd , but I wasn't working. his father make shepherd the sheep at old house.

my personality is different from him. he gets angry faster than me. he is hot person but i am cold person. if some do something wrong he get angry but me like nothing happen. my uncle told me once " your father is like your grand father's personalty ". my father told me a story when he was young." your grand father sent me to buy fruit and i chose anything and your grand father saw me from the house. when i got home, he hit my head with his hand and he asked me "why you didn't you chose the better ones? go back and do it agin". your grand father has a powerful personalty".

i want to be like my father in the future. my father treats me like i am the oldest one in the family but it sometimes it's good and sometimes bad. if my brother and i going out, he give the money to me. it bad sometimes because sometimes he put all the pressure to do something right like diving and a lot of my father friends told me" you look like your father.

What are the differences and similarities between my brothers? Mohammed is 28 years old. Abdul is 26 years old. There are many differences and similarities between them in their education, looks and personality.

Most people think if you want to study in a university, you should to study the same major as your brother. I think that is not good thinking, because when you study something you like, you can do it very well. Mohammed studied Mechanical Engineering, because he liked it when he was a child. Abdul entered the army because he hates to study a lot. Now, Mohammed is studying for the GARE. After that, he is going to study Master for an MBA. However Abdul is working in the army. Abdul teaches the solders how can they use weapon. Also, he teaches them how can they do in the war.Two months ago Saudi Arabia had a war, so the govorment told him we need you in the war. Then he went to the war, and Saudi Arabia won in that war .Mohammed and Abdul have a different educations.

Sometimes when I see two brothers I can't know who is this and that, because they look alike. Mohammed and Abdul have different and similarity looks. Mohammed has black eyes, but Abdul has brown eyes. Mohammed is slim, but Abdul is medium. Mohammed has white skin a likewise Abdul. When you see my brothers, you can know who is Mohammed and who is Abdul, because they look differences between them.

The most important thing you should know when you talk or work with someone is personality Mohammed is a kind person as likewise is Abdul. Mohammed is calm, but Abdul is angry. Mohammed is smart like Abdul. Mohammed likes to sit alone, but Abdul hates that. I think the personality is a different between a person and anthor.

In conclusion, there are many differences and similarities between brothers in their education, look like and personality. Sometimes brothers should have some personality, education and looks

What can you do if you have only two kids with very different personalities? My daughter is six years old, and my son only four. They are very close in age, but they are very different in personalities, interests, and the activities they prefer to do.

My daughter and my son have different personalities that require different parenting. My daughter is very sensitive. Her emotions always reflect her feelings. Sometimes she cries with many tears just because she misses someone from our family in Libya. Also, if she need something like Ice cream or sweet, it should be available as soon as possible. Furthermore, she will remind me several time a day and seven days a week until she gets what she wants. Unlike my daughter, my son rarely shows his emotions. He always hides his tears or cries in place where no one can see him. Also, unlike his sister, if he requests something, and I do not bring it to him, normally he will not request it again. My daughter has her personality and so my son has.

Each one of my kids has interests which are very different to the other. For example my daughter enjoys baby's songs especially girls songs. In contrast my son prefers watching animals show particularly wild animals. You can imagine the competition at the computer! Who is the winner? Usually my daughter because she uses the computer better than he does. Some times he disturbs her until he gets a chance to watch his favorite show. For us as parents, we know that reflect their different interests.

My kids do not do the same activities. my daughter likes to play with kitchen toys. Also she likes drawing very much. She enjoys being busy the whole day. My son is full of activities. However he likes to play with car toys. He does not like drawing, but he enjoys using a pen or a pencil to write on white paper. Both of them enjoy doing different interests that make them feel happy.

Those are my kids, and each of them has his or her own character. After all it is plain to me that in the future they will be more different in personalities, interests, and activities they like to do. We think that they are under our control, but many times the opposite is true.

It's unbelievable that I met this kind of guy. This guy has goal and ideal life so amazing identical as mine. We experienced a period of difficult time together. Also I admire him for his excellent character. This guy is my boyfriend. I can't forget him in my life.

My boyfriend, who is the first and the only one person hitherto who has an ideal career and life, the same as I. I remember that day from two years ago, we chated when we had dinner together. He told me he was going to study abroad and then work abroad. He said, "I want to establish an international enterprise about mechanical engineering in a western country. Besides I want to take my families to live in other country so that they can breath more and more fresh air and have their own villas and farms." I listened to him calm down, but I was so amazed in my heart. I was surprised that his opinion matched mine. We have the same ideal and the same goals for the furture.

We became boyfriend and girlfriend later. I told him that we had identical ideals. Consequently, we studied english together to pass the language test. Despite the fact that we were designing our graduation projects at that time, we did both of them well. As a result, we lived in a manufactory enterprise in a suburb in order to do our graduate thesises. Meanwhile we studied English in a quiet place . However, we needed to cook by ourselves in a dirty area. In addition, there weren't shopping malls and entertainment places. We only studied and designed in the factory. It's so terrible for one year. However, we had achieved by working hardly. Our graduation thesises both got A score and we won and recieved prizes for the best graduation students in Beijing. Almost no one can get them in our university. We had had the same laborious experience and won the to graduation prizes together. It's so amazing too.

Actually, I admire him for his excellent character. He has more patience than ordinary person. He is more mature than his contemporaries. If someone else is angry, he always has ideas to calm them down and solve many difficult problems. He considers all aspects of some problems to deal with them. Even he can make plans and steps. I always feel relax with him, especially when I run into some challenges.

It's rare that lovers have the same goals and experiences. Sometimes, I can't believe that I met this guy who matches me. He also has an excellent character. I think I can't forget him in my life.

why I came to the u.s . I came to learn English. because English. English is the most important language in the world today and English is spreading fast in the world. I am learning English because I want to improve my speaking and listening.
my goal is to be successful and happy in my life. I hope to finish learning English quickly to go to CU I wish everyone will be successful in them life. My sister will come to spring to.

I have a lot of people I can't forget, but the best person for me is my father. He is a kind person.He helps me a lot, and he gives me advice and helps me when I do anything. He is friendly, so I consider him a friend.

My father in my hometown, is famous because he is a kind person. My father always helps poor people. If my father needs helps, all of the people in my hometown help him. I always ask my father why he helps the people and is kind to them. He tells me if I have a problem, all the people help me. I think if you are kind, you make the people like you.

I always need someone to help me and give me advice. My father always calls me and asks me if I want anything. My father told me, I want you to be the best, so this make me happy. I remember when I was a child, he gave me a lot of advice. When my father gives me advice, I feel comfortable. I miss my father when I live in America because sometimes I need someone to talk to me face to face.

I think you need someone who is a friend, and when you make a mistake, he teaches you to get true. I consider my father a friend because he is friendly. I always play soccer with him. I remember when I was 18 years old my father went to my school and took me to a coffee shop, because I told him I felt bad that day. Sometimes I miss him a lot, because I haven't found a person friendly like him.

In conclusion, I think all of these personality traits kind , helpful and friendly make him a good person for me. I won't forget my father forever, because if I forget him, I would be selfish. I miss him a lot, so I hope to see him soon.

My dad is the most important person who I have ever met, and I will never forget him. I loved my dad as myself. He always was kind and gentle with me.He took care of me while I was seriously sick by sending me to Europe to follow a treatment.He permitted me to come here continue my studies in the U.S. I love my dad and I have missed him since he passed away.


First,He always was gentle and kind with me.Everyday, he dropped me off at school, and he also come to pick me up after class. He offered me everything I asked him for. He never beat me for any reasons, even if I didn't respect everything he said. My dad had many qualities such as his gentleness for me. I love him so much.


Secondly, my dad took care of me when i got seriously sick. I almost died because I suffered for a long time. Fortunately, my dad spent a lot of money to send me to Europe, Switzerland to be specific. I was in the best hospital in Europe. I followed a treatment and felt better than when I was in the Congo. My dad saved my life and I won't forget that.


In addition,he permitted me to come here to continue my studies in the U.S. While I was studying at the high school, he told me if I get straight A's as my final grades, I could travel to the U.S. This is the greatest opportunity for me because I can realize my dream here. My dad showed me his love for me and I won't ever thank him enough.


Finally, my dad is the most important person who I have ever known in my life. He was very careful with me and he gave me the best gift that I ever received when he sent me here. I was sick and he saved my life. My dad gave me a lot of his love and I won't ever thank him enough for that.

Littleton And Beijing by Fairy

Have you ever been Beijing? Do you know how about different between Littleton and Beijing? I'm form Beijing. When I arrived Littleton, I found three differences that are buildings, traffic and weather in these two beautiful cities.

In the first place, there are rare high-rise blocks and buildings more than 3 floors in Littleton. In contrast, so many architectures higher than 20 floors place on Beijing. Actually, the buildings of 6 stories are the shortest architectures besides bungalows or one-story house. The modern structures almost have 20 or 30 floors. Moreover, there are few miles between buildings in Beijing. However, every family has own garden and the side of the road always are full of grass-lawn at here. It may be result of the number of people in city.

The another reflect of large number of people is traffic. As well known, the serious traffic problem is traffic jam in Beijing. If you want to drive to go home or by bus at around 7 o'clock am or 5 o'clock pm, you will spend 2 or 3 hours. Even though you may take 10 minutes in the time of traffic smoothly. On the contrary, whenever the cars are driven very fast look like on the no person road except waiting for red light or walkmen in Littleton. In addition, there are many square roads. Rather than six rings roads place on the Beijing roadway. And there are many high speed ways connect with these ring roads. That is very complex traffic system in Beijing. So it's usually heard that some person can't find right way again.

Thirdly, it's easily to change another kind of weather in Littleton. I have lived in here for one week. I even felt that I experienced two seasons from summer to autumon. In the summer day, I felt I almost was burn when I was shone. But even the next day, I had to wear my cotton-padded jacket to keep me warm. Conversely, you won't change another kind of clothes, if you prepare the summer clothes in Beijing.

Consequently, there not only are these three aspects, buildings, traffic and weather, but also other deeply degree distinctes such as people and culture between the two cities. Littleton and Beijing are radically different cities.

My best friend is Ahmed. He is very friendly and helpful. I like to go to the desert with Ahmed and my friends for picnics. Also I like to travel with Ahmed because he is a lot of fun. I miss my best friend so much.

First, he is always ready to help any body. When I came to Denver, Ahmed helped me with ever thing because I didn't know anything. On my first day, he came to the Airport, and he picked me up. Then we ate dinner to gather. On the second day we went to the bank to opean an Account for me. After I started my school, he always calls to ask me if I need any help.

When I was in Dubai, We went to the desert ever weekend. We played football with other teams. After that Ahmed would start cook for us, and all my friends would be happy with the delicious food. After we finished our dinner, I played cards with Ahmed and my friends.

I have traveled several times with Ahmed. We traveled to Switzerland last years. Ahmed always checks places to visit before traveling to any countries. Also I like to travel with him because he is a lot of fun and he is always finds the best places in the country.

Finally, I miss my best friend so much. He graduated from University and he went back to Dubai. Now I am staying alone. I have 2 friends, but they are not same as Ahmed. I'll always remamber our times togather. I know we will always be best friends because we have a lot in common and he is a nice person. I'll never forget when I traveled with him and he helped me a lot.

What's the worst day or the best day that you ever had in your life..? Any person for sure have had worst or best day in his life.For me,I have had the best day in my life at Vail in the United states.This day was very important to me,because i spent a very good time.

My trip to Vail was the best trip that i have ever had in whole life,i did many things,but all of these things were not exciting like my trip to Vail.for me it was the Paradise.I didn't know that the trip would be like totally awesome.I really enjoyed a lot there.

Vail is a very nice place.Many people from different places like to go Vail,because of many reasons.it has got very nice weather.Its in a very nice place which is up in the mountains,and in the winter there is a lot of snow.People who love to ski,come from all over the world to do their favorite sport which is skiing.I went there and I did many funny and nice things.I didn't know how to ski.I Was very embarrassed,because a lot of people there are very good at skiing,but it was my first time and i fell many times.I didn't hurt myself.I took many pictures there.I did that because I wanted something to remind me of this nice trip.

I really had a good time there.I always wish that i can go Vail as soon as i can.I will never get bored with this nice place.Next time i will there and i will have very nice and fun time.Vail is a very nice place to go.I have had the best time ever in my life there.Finally,I'm planing to go there again in the future.
